How to use Canva to design products for your Etsy store
Whether you're designing art prints, greeting cards, stickers or even your own branded packaging, Canva makes it ridiculously easy to create stunning, on-brand visuals, even if you are not a designer. And when it's time to turn those designs into real, tangible products? That's where we come in.
Why use Canva for Etsy and e-Commerce design
If we're being honest, Etsy and other e-commerce sites aren't just for crocheted octopuses and candles anymore. It hasn't been for years. Sure, Etsy still has its fair share of crocheted animals and vintage finds, but it's also a platform for illustrators, designers and brand-builders. It is a thriving marketplace full of independent creators, illustrators and fledgling entrepreneurs making their mark. The Etsy seller handbook is a fantastic resource, especially if you are just getting started.
That said, it can be tough juggling both the creative side and the technical bits. Luckily, Canva serves to bridge that gap. With its free drag-and-drop editor, hundreds of pre-sized templates and an ever-growing library of fonts, elements and even mock-ups, it gives you the power to make professional-quality designs without the pro-level price tag.
You can create:
- Art prints that match your aesthetic
- Branded thank-you cards or packaging inserts
- Printed clothing and apparel
And we're just barely scratching the surface.
Best Canva Tips for designing print products
If you plan to print your Canva designs, instead of just using them digitally, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Use high-resolution images (300 DPI): Blurry prints? No thanks. Ensure any uploaded photos or artwork are high-resolution, so that your finished products look as good in real life as it does on-screen.
- Add bleed and crop marks: When downloading your design, choose PDF Print and tick the box that says 'Crop marks and bleed'. This ensures nothing important gets trimmed off the edges during printing.
- Stick to CMYK-safe colours: Canva works in RGB by default, which looks great on screens but not always in print. Use CMYK-friendly colour palettes and avoid neon or super-bright tones that might not convert well.
- Watch your margins: Keep key text and design elements at least 3mm from the edge. It will save all the hassle down the line when it comes to it.
