Design guidelines
To make artwork setup simple, we recommend downloading the relevant template from the 'Product Templates' section above. Don’t forget to follow the template instructions and delete the 'guide' layer before exporting your design to a PDF.
For best printing results, ensure your artwork and images are CMYK. If you use RGB, Pantone or spot colours in any element of your artwork, we will automatically convert them to CMYK which may change your colour profile.
To eliminate any font issues, make sure all fonts are ‘embedded’ or ‘converted to outlines’ before creating your PDF print file. To ensure legibility, we recommend using a minimum font size of 10pt.
For optimal image print quality, ensure all images are 300dpi to 450dpi. Anything lower than 300dpi will give poor image quality. Images higher than 450dpi will result in high file sizes and may cause longer upload times.
To avoid alignment issues during cutting, be sure to include ‘crop marks’ (offset 10mm) and ‘document bleed’ when exporting your artwork file to PDF. Refer to our product templates for the required bleed specifications.
To meet our print requirements, ensure your file is exported in Adobe PDF (Print) format, ideally as PDF/X-1a: 2001.

Book Binding Types Explained
Choosing the right book binding can improve both the look and functionality of your printed product. Watch our Book Binding Types Explained video guide to explore the most popular binding styles and find the best option for your project.
Hard back book printing are publications characterised by their sturdy, rigid covers, typically crafted from 4mm grey board. The inner pages are glued along the spine and secured to the hard cover using endpapers. This binding method provides a professional appearance and enhanced durability, making them a popular choice for lasting publications like novels and textbooks.
Silk: This paper provides a smooth, slightly shiny surface that enhances vibrancy while minimising glare. Learn more.
Gloss: This paper has a reflective, shiny finish that enhances colour vibrancy and makes images stand out. Learn more.
Uncoated: This paper offers a natural, matt texture that absorbs ink for a softer print look. Learn more.
Recycled: This paper is made from 100% reclaimed FSC® certified fibre and features a natural matt finish. Learn more,
Spot UV: This finish adds a glossy, raised coating to specific areas, creating a striking contrast and highlighting key elements. Applied with Scodix technology.
Gold / Silver Foil: This finish provides a metallic sheen to select areas, giving your design a luxurious and distinctive appearance. Applied with Scodix technology.
Specify the number of pages (including four for the cover) in our product configurator. Our calculator will then display the correct spine thickness in millimetres alongside your page count. When using our templates, remember to adjust them for the calculated spine size.
Case bound books have a rigid cover and a more pronounced spine, which causes a greater part of each inner page to fall into the gutter (the inside margin). This means more of your artwork may be obscured in the centre of the spread compared to other binding types.
To avoid losing important content—such as text or crucial parts of an image—keep all key elements at least 15mm away from the spine. If your design includes a full image spread across two facing pages, bear in mind that some detail will be lost in the fold. It’s best to avoid placing faces, small text, or fine detail in this area.
If you're unsure, we recommend speaking with our team before submitting your artwork.
Endpapers are plain sheets of paper affixed to the inside of the covers, both front and back, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. They enhance the visual design of the book while also strengthening the binding by helping secure the pages to the hard cover.
Our hardback books come with 4-page endpapers, glued to the inside front and back covers. You do not need to include endpapers in your artwork as we handle this automatically. By default, endpapers are unprinted and uncoated. For printed or 2-page endpapers, please contact our bespoke services.
