Design guidelines
To make artwork setup simple, download the relevant template from the Production templates section above. Follow the instructions provided and remember to remove the 'Guide' layer before exporting your artwork as a PDF.
For the best printing results, ensure your artwork and images are in CMYK. If you use RGB, Pantone or spot colours, these will be converted to CMYK during production, which may affect how your colours appear in print.
To avoid font issues, make sure all fonts are embedded or converted to outlines before exporting your PDF. For readability, we recommend using a minimum font size of 10pt.
For the best print quality, aim for images between 300dpi and 450dpi at their final print size. Lower resolutions may appear blurry or pixelated, while higher resolutions can increase file sizes. Check product template for any specific requirements.
To avoid alignment issues during cutting, include crop marks with a 10mm offset and document bleed when exporting your artwork as a PDF. Refer to the relevant product template for the required bleed specifications, as these vary by product.
All artwork must be supplied as a print ready PDF. We recommend exporting in Adobe PDF (Print) format, ideally using the PDF/X 1a:2001 standard.

This gives hardback book binding a more substantial, protective cover than a paperback, making it suitable for yearbooks, portfolios, coffee table books and publications intended to be kept.
Choose from A5, A4 and 210 × 210mm square formats, with portrait, landscape and custom size options available. The selected size refers to the inner pages. The hardback cover extends beyond them, so always use the correct cover template when preparing your artwork.
Silk offers a smooth finish with a subtle sheen, while gloss gives images a more reflective appearance. Uncoated paper has a natural matt finish and suits text or pages intended for writing. Recycled paper provides another matt option using recycled fibres.
Lighter papers help keep longer books manageable, while heavier papers give individual pages a more substantial feel. Your choice also affects the book’s thickness and spine width.
Choose matt lamination for a subtle finish, gloss for a reflective shine or soft touch for a velvety feel. Lamination also adds protection to the printed cover.

Count each side of an inner sheet as one page, including any intentional blank pages. Then add two cover pages: one for the front and one for the back. For example, 100 inner pages requires a total of 102 pages when ordering.
Don’t add inside cover pages or the standard endpapers to this total.
Endpapers connect the inner pages to the hardback cover. Four page plain white endpapers are included at both the front and back of your book, with one page of each set glued to the inside cover board. Once assembled, these form a white lining inside each cover and a blank leaf, white on both sides, before and after your printed content.
These are added during production, so don’t include them in your artwork or ordering page count. If you require two page endpapers or printed endpapers, request a bespoke quote.
Select your final paper stock, paper weight and page count in the product configurator, then use the displayed spine width to adjust your cover template.
Check the measurement again if you change your paper or page count, as this can alter the spine width. Don’t estimate it or reuse a measurement from a different book specification.
