Design guidelines
To make artwork setup simple, download the relevant template from the Production templates section above. Follow the instructions provided and remember to remove the 'Guide' layer before exporting your artwork as a PDF.
For the best printing results, ensure your artwork and images are in CMYK. If you use RGB, Pantone or spot colours, these will be converted to CMYK during production, which may affect how your colours appear in print.
To avoid font issues, make sure all fonts are embedded or converted to outlines before exporting your PDF. For readability, we recommend using a minimum font size of 10pt.
For the best print quality, aim for images between 300dpi and 450dpi at their final print size. Lower resolutions may appear blurry or pixelated, while higher resolutions can increase file sizes. Check product template for any specific requirements.
To avoid alignment issues during cutting, include crop marks with a 10mm offset and document bleed when exporting your artwork as a PDF. Refer to the relevant product template for the required bleed specifications, as these vary by product.
All artwork must be supplied as a print ready PDF. We recommend exporting in Adobe PDF (Print) format, ideally using the PDF/X 1a:2001 standard.

Designing with Canva

Canva uses RGB colour mode by default, which is designed for screens rather than print. For the best printing results, make sure you select CMYK when exporting your artwork. Converting from RGB to CMYK can cause slight colour shifts, so always check your exported PDF carefully before uploading to avoid unexpected results.
Need help with colours? Read our Canva colour guide.
Use fonts of at least 10pt to maintain legibility and keep important text within the safe zone. Use images at 300dpi or higher at their final size to avoid blurry or pixelated results.
Need help with image quality? Read our artwork resolution guide or watch our YouTube tutorial on how to export Canva designs for print.
Extend backgrounds, colours and images into the bleed area to avoid unwanted white edges after trimming. Keep important text, logos and design elements within the safe zone, and follow the bleed requirements for your chosen product.
Need help setting up bleed? Read our Canva bleed setup guide.
When exporting your finished design from Canva, select PDF Print and enable 'Crop Marks and Bleed'. This ensures your artwork includes the necessary bleed for printing. Remember to remove any template guides before downloading your file.

Book binding types explained
Choosing the right book binding can improve both the look and functionality of your printed product. Watch our book binding types explained video guide to explore the most popular binding styles and find the best option for your project.
Saddle stitching binds folded sheets together with metal staples through the centre fold. Saddle stitched booklets and stapled booklets are names for the same binding method.
Choose this format for shorter publications such as brochures, programmes, newsletters and prospectuses. For publications that exceed the available page count, explore our Perfect Bound Books.
Your booklet can contain between 8 and 68 pages, including four cover pages. The maximum depends on your chosen paper stock and weight, as heavier papers reduce the number of pages that can be stapled.
Count the front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover and back cover alongside your inner pages. For example, 20 inner pages plus four cover pages makes a 24 page booklet.
The total must be a multiple of four because each folded sheet creates four pages.
Choose A6, A5, A4 or 210 x 210mm square, with custom sizes available from 105 x 148mm up to 300 x 300mm.
A4 and A5 booklet printing is available in portrait or landscape. A6 booklets are available in portrait only. Select your finished size and orientation before preparing your artwork.
Silk offers a smooth finish with a subtle sheen, making it a versatile choice for text and images. Gloss provides a shinier surface for photographs and graphics. Uncoated paper has a natural matt feel and is suitable for writing on, while recycled paper offers a matt finish made from recycled fibres.
You can choose the same paper for the cover and inner pages or select a heavier cover for a more substantial feel. Heavier papers increase the booklet’s thickness and may reduce the maximum page count available.
Yes. Choose Full Colour or Black Only separately for the cover and inner pages. This allows you to pair a colourful cover with black only text inside, or select full colour throughout for photographs, illustrations and graphics.
Choose gloss lamination for a shiny finish, matt for less reflection or soft touch for a velvety feel. Spot UV adds a raised gloss effect to selected elements, while gold or silver foil adds a reflective metallic finish.
Cover finishing is not available on uncoated or recycled stock. Choose from the finishing options available for your selected cover specification.
Supply two separate PDFs containing individual pages, rather than spreads:
Follow our Stitched Book Artwork Guide for the full setup.
Keep important text, logos and image details at least 5mm from the page edges. In saddle stitched booklets, inner sheets extend slightly further out before trimming, an effect known as creep. We compensate for this during production, but safe margins help prevent important content being trimmed.
Avoid placing text, faces or essential details directly across the centre fold, where folding and staples can interrupt the design. Follow the product template for bleed and safe areas.
Supply separate finishing artwork showing the areas that should receive foil or spot UV, aligned precisely with your printed cover design.
Follow the Gold Foil, Silver Foil or Spot UV Artwork Guide in the product’s Hints, tips and guides section for the required setup. These finishes aren’t available on uncoated or recycled covers.
Turnaround times depend on your chosen product specifications and finishing options. For faster delivery, we offer express production upgrades at an additional cost. (Quantity limits apply) To avoid delays, make sure we receive your artwork before the cut off time shown on the product page and in your basket.
